What are "Beneficial Bugs"?
Controlling pests with predatory and parasitic insects is an ancient practice. The Chinese put yellow ants to work controlling citrus damaging caterpillars centuries ago. Even in this country, the practice dates back more than 100 years; in the late 19th century a beneficial beetle was used to control scale insects.
Here's How It's Done
During the late winter and early spring your landscape is carefully inspected for over wintering insects evidenced by egg masses, past damage and actual presence of destructive insects. An evaluation is made of the population observed, condition of host plants, effectiveness of past control methods, target insect life cycle and other factors that contribute to the effective use of biological controls. During May beneficial insects that are predators of the destructive species are released. These voracious eaters effectively destroy populations of mealy bugs, spider mites, trips, caterpillars and equally importantly - their eggs.

A properly implemented Integrated Pest Management program including the use of these natural controls is a responsible way of protecting the environment while preserving your landscape. The use of conventional pesticides is minimized and best of all, beneficial insects attack and destroy only pest insects; they are harmless to people, plants and pets.
